ABORIGINAL SPORT DEVELOPMENT
The Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC) & Aboriginal Sport Development
The Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC) is Canada’s national voice for Aboriginal Sport, which brings together the interests of First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples. Established in 1995, the ASC was created through a national consensus – building process, in response to the need for more accessible and equitable sport and recreation opportunities for Aboriginal peoples.
The ASC is a collective of Provincial/Territorial Aboriginal Sport Bodies. Each of them carries the mandate to represent the grassroots sport and recreation interests of the Aboriginal peoples of their regions. It is their voice that guides the direction of the ASC and establishes its national priorities.
Football Canada, the National Office staff, and sport leaders from Canada’s Aboriginal Sport Community have been working on a project to develop and implement Flag Football Programs for Canada’s Aboriginal Youth.
To date, the participants in the project have been: Bob Swan, Rick Sowieta, Rod Jacobs, JJ Johnston, Courage Bear, Robin Enman, Gordon Hudson, and Dean Mastrangelo.
In February 2006, the Aboriginal Sport Circle Board of Directors threw their support behind the project. On March 9th, Football Canada hosted a meeting with ASC representatives to begin the planning process for the new initiative. The result of the meeting was a list of recommendations on how the project might proceed. These recommendations were presented at Football Canada’s Flag Football Development and Planning Meeting which was held March 10th - 12th, 2006. The committee endorsed the general recommendations, which will be presented at the Football Canada’s AGM in July 2006.
In the meantime, work will continue to develop the pilot projects and to support the partnership initiative.
