Signs of Flag Football Growth
According to CFL Flag Football, which delivers Flag kits to schools throughout the country, there was a 278% increase in school age participants in 2003-2004 and a 56% increase between 2004 and 2005, when it was estimated that over 300,000 persons of school age participate in Flag Football.
In July, 2006 a Flag tournament in St. Jean Sur Richelieu, Quebec, hosted two outside countries for the first time ever. Forty teams competed in an annual open Flag tournament, fourteen more teams than last year illustrating growth of Flag Football across the globe.
International flag tournaments are gaining ground. The NFL Flag World Championships, which hosts an Under-15 rep team from 10 different countries, were most recently played in Cologne, Germany. In addition, The International Federation of American Football unifies 39 football organizations throughout the world. It hosts a Flag Football World Cup every two years, which in 2006 included 9 men’s teams and 4 women’s teams.
