Japan conquers Graz

In an amazing first game in Group B, Japan beats Austria 24:6

Twice the world champion and silver medalist in 2007 only by virtue of a double over time loss to the United States, Japan fired a clear message that they will be among the teams to beat at the 2011 IFAF Senior World Championship with a convincing 24-6 win over host Austria.

Japan lead 17-6 at halftime in the opening Group B game after two rushing touchdowns silenced a noisy partisan home crowd at the UPC Arena in Graz.  The defense stepped up in the second half to shut out a frustrated home offense and added a third touchdown to put the result beyond doubt.

"I was disappointed, especially in the first half, starting out with an interception that we never seemed to recover from," said Austria head coach Rick Rhoades.  "I thought our guys played hard against a great team.  There were a few mistakes and they proved crucial.  We have to learn from it and move on."

Mexico fights down Germany

Mexico mounted a fourth quarter comeback to beat Germany 22-15 in the day’s second game of the IFAF World Championship.

Trailing 15-12 with 11:05 remaining having led at halftime, Mexico tied a thrilling game with a field goal and then produced a rushing touchdown from Jose Reyes just before the two-minute warning.  Linebacker David Aceves sealed victory in the Tivoli Stadium in Innsbruck with an interception with less than a minute remaining.

Mexico held a slim three-point advantage with a 10-7 halftime lead after defenses impressed and penalties took their toll on Mexico early in the contest.

“We knew the Germans were the European Champions, so we expected them to be a tough rival and Germany was very tough today,” said Mexico assistant coach Manuel Neri Fernández.  “Every time we would have a big play, Germany fought back and challenged us again. It was a great game.”
